CAT & Genny (Cable Avoidance Tool) Training
At Barry Training Services (BTS), we offer this course through both NPORS accreditation and BTS certification, allowing employers to select the option that best suits their operational and client requirements.
Training can be delivered at one of our training centres or on-site at your premises, enabling delegates to train in a familiar working environment using real-world conditions.
The course combines classroom-based learning with practical exercises, ensuring delegates not only understand the theory behind underground service detection but can also confidently apply their knowledge in the field.
Delegates will gain an understanding of:
- The hazards associated with underground services
- Legal responsibilities and industry best practice
- Types of buried utilities commonly encountered on site
- How Cable Avoidance Tools (CAT) and Signal Generators (Genny) operate
- Different detection modes and their applications
- Equipment checks and pre-use inspections
- Conducting effective underground service surveys
- Identifying and tracing buried services
- Common limitations and sources of error
- Marking out services prior to excavation
- Good site practices for avoiding utility strikes
Practical Training
A key element of the course is the practical session, where delegates will use CAT & Genny equipment under instructor supervision to locate and trace buried services. This hands-on training helps build confidence and competence, ensuring delegates can safely apply the techniques learned during the course.
Certification
Upon successful completion, delegates can receive either:
- NPORS CAT & Genny Certification, or
- BTS CAT & Genny Certification
The certification route can be selected based on individual, company or client requirements.
By combining theoretical knowledge with practical experience, this course helps organisations reduce the risk of underground service strikes, improve site safety and ensure personnel are competent in the use of CAT & Genny equipment.
