What is the Site Safety Plus Scheme?

The Site Safety Plus Scheme provides the building, civil engineering and allied industries with a framework for training and career development, for all levels of the workforce.

The Scheme recognises a natural progression, from someone new to the industry through to those responsible for managing construction work. Starting with a health and safety awareness day to prepare for the Health and Safety Test, and progressing to an intermediate level for those about to have supervisory responsibilities. There is then an advanced level for those with management responsibilities.

CITB SITE SAFETY PLUS HEALTH & SAFETY AWARENESS COURSE (HSA)

Duration: 1 day

Course Overview
This course highlights potential hazards when working on site and provides practical advice on keeping yourself and your colleagues safe. It covers your individual and employer’s responsibilities, including what you can do if you think anyone’s health and safety is being put at risk.

Who should attend?
This course is for you if you’re considering, or already, working within the construction and civil engineering industry.

Aims & Objectives of Course

To ensure the individual responsibilities of the worker are understood.

  • Why they are carrying out their identified duties.
  • What is expected of them.
  • How they contribute to the safety of the workplace.

Assessment of Training
Assessment will be by multiple-choice question paper at the end of the course. Delegates are also expected to actively participate during the course.
Candidates who successfully complete the course receive a CITB Site Safety Plus Certificate in Health & Safety Awareness.

Progression
A natural progression from this course would be to attend the Site supervision safety training scheme (SSSTS) course or a supervisor specialist skills course. Courses are held a number of times a month, please contact us for dates.

CSCS Labourer Card
This is the official CITB course for delegates who wish to apply for their Green CSCS Labourers Card. By completing this course, and the CSCS Health, Safety & Environment Test, delegates can then contact CSCS to pay and apply for their CSCS Card.

CITB SITE SAFETY PLUS SSSTS (Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme)

Duration: 2 days

Course Overview
The course covers all relevant legislation and other aspects which affect safe working in the building, construction and civil engineering industries. It highlights the need for risk assessment in the workplace, the implementation of the necessary control measures, and adequate communication to sustain a health and safety culture among the workforce.
The SSSTS course is endorsed by Build UK and exceeds the standard set by CITB for construction supervisors training.

Who should attend?
This two-day Site supervision safety training scheme (SSSTS) course is designed for those who have, or are about to acquire, supervisory responsibilities.

Aims & Objectives of Course
To help site supervisors to:

  • supervise health and safety on site in accordance with current legal provisions and within the context of their role
  • develop an understanding of responsibility and accountability for site health, safety and welfare of workers on site
  • recognise that a safe site is efficient, economical, productive and environmentally friendly.

Assessment of Training
Assessment will be by an end of course examination and the trainer review. The delegate must pass the exam and pass all three elements of the trainer review.

Pre training requirements
Delegates should hold, or be about to hold, the role of a supervisor. Delegates must be competent in English at site supervisor level.

Candidates who successfully complete the course receive a CITB Site Safety Plus Site Supervision Safety Training Scheme Certificate.

Progression
A natural progression from this course would be to attend the Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) course.

SSSTS Refresher
There is a one day SSSTS Refresher course available to delegates who wish to refresh. To be eligible to attend, they must complete the Refresher prior to the expiry date of their current certificate

CITB SITE SAFETY PLUS SMSTS (Site Management Safety Training Scheme)

Duration: 5 days

Course Overview
The course covers all relevant legislation and other aspects which affect safe working in the building, construction and civil engineering industries. It highlights the need for risk assessment in the workplace, the implementation of the necessary control measures, and adequate communication to sustain a health and safety culture among the workforce.
The SMSTS course is endorsed by Build UK as the standard training for all construction managers.

Who should attend?
This five-day Site management safety training scheme (SMSTS) course is designed for site managers, agents and persons who are, or are about to be, responsible for planning, organising, monitoring, controlling and administering groups of staff within a construction environment.

Aims & Objectives of Course
To help site managers to:

  • manage health and safety on site in accordance with current legal provisions and within the context of their management role
  • develop an understanding of responsibility and accountability for site health, safety and welfare
  • recognise that a safe site is efficient, economical, productive and environmentally friendly.

Assessment of Training
Assessment will be by an end of course exam paper, the completion of four core exercises and a trainer review, for which the delegate will need to gain a PASS in all elements of the review.

Pre training requirements
Delegates should hold, or be about to hold, the role of a manager. Delegates must be competent in English at site management level.

Candidates who successfully complete the course receive a CITB Site Safety Plus Site Management Safety Training Scheme Certificate.

SMSTS Refresher

There is a two day SMSTS Refresher course available to delegates who wish to refresh. To be eligible to attend, they must complete the Refresher prior to the expiry date of their current certificate

CITB SITE SAFETY PLUS SEATS (Site Environmental Awareness Training Scheme)

Duration: 1 day

Course Overview
The course is designed to meet the basic environmental knowledge that the sub-contract chain are required to prove to major contractors, and covers the environmental aspects of the new HS&E touch screen test. The course will bring the candidates environmental and sustainability knowledge up to date by giving a thorough overview of the subject, relevant legislation and industry best practice.
It will enable them to identify, control and minimise the environmental impacts of their work and where possible identify environmental improvement opportunities.

Who should attend
This one day interactive course has been developed for site supervisors/managers with the aim of providing candidates with an introduction to environmental issues on construction sites.

Aims & Objectives of Course

The delegate will gain knowledge and understanding in:

  • what is meant by the term ‘environment’
  • how to deal with archaeology and heritage on a construction project
    effective waste management
  • pollution controls, and why the environment should be protected
  • the use of environmental management systems
  • why it is important to be a good neighbour and responsible contractor.

At the end of the day delegates will be able to:

  • understand the need to protect the environment
  • implement environmental management systems into the management of the site
  • have an understanding of the impact archaeology and heritage can have on a site
  • identify the principles of the good neighbour initiative
  • appreciate the need to be a responsible contractor

Assessment of Training
Assessment will be by multiple-choice questions at the end of the course. It is also expected that delegates interact during the course.

Pre training requirements
There are no formal entry requirements for this course; however, it has been developed for construction supervisors and this should therefore be considered before enrolling delegates on to this course. Delegates must be competent in English at site supervisor level.
Candidates who successfully complete the course receive a CITB Site Safety Plus Site Environmental Safety Training Scheme Certificate.

Refresher Training

Delegates will need to attend the SEATS course every 5 years to keep their certificate valid.

Achieving Behavioural Change (ABC)

Duration: 1 day

Overview of Course
It provides you with an understanding of how attitude, behaviour, communication and worker engagement, at all levels, can help prevent the chances of accidents occurring.
At the end of the course you will have an understanding of:

  • the basic legal duties of employers and employees
  • define hazards, risks and control measures
  • list possible causes of accidents
  • understand the link between attitude and behaviour
  • understand the costs of poor safety performance
  • understand the benefits of good safety performance
  • put ABC into practice using the STAARR and TASK card
  • successfully complete the course assessment

Assessment
Assessment is by multiple-choice questions, which require the delegate to answer nine questions relating to the subject areas covered.

Temporary Works Training (Awareness, Supervisor & Coordinator)

Temporary Works General Awareness Training Course (TWGAT)

This is a one day course, the aim of the course is to:

  • Cover what constitutes temporary works, how they are used, their safety critical importance, common temporary works issues and the temporary works management process.
  • Update delegates on the latest publications and issues relating to temporary works.

Temporary Works Supervisor Training Course (TWSTC)

This is a one day course, this course gives emphasis throughout to the importance of communication, co-ordination, co-operation and competency (the ‘4Cs’), risk management, safety and business relations.

This course allows the Temporary Works Supervisor (TWS) to:

  • understand the need for and duties of a Temporary Works Supervisor
  • understand the role of others
  • have a detailed knowledge and understanding of BS5975 in respect of this role.

Attendance does not confer competency as a Temporary Works Supervisor; this comes from a mixture of education, training and experience and should be judged by an appropriate senior individual, usually referred to as the Designated Individual (DI). Training is considered an essential element of Temporary Works Supervisor competence.

Temporary Works Coordinator Training Course (TWCTC)

This is a two day course, the course gives emphasis throughout to the importance of communication, co-ordination, co-operation and competency (the ‘4Cs’), risk management, safety and business relations.

Allowing the Temporary Works Co-ordinator (TWC) to:

  • Understand the need for and duties of a Temporary Works Co-ordinator
  • Understand the role of others
  • Have a detailed knowledge and understanding of BS5975 in respect of this role

Attendance does not confer competency as a Temporary Works Co-ordinator; this comes from a mixture of education, training and experience and should be judged by an appropriate senior individual, usually referred to as the Designated Individual (DI). Training is considered an essential element of Temporary Works Co-ordinator competence.

Refresher Training

Delegates will need to attend the relevant Temporary Works course every 5 years to keep their certificate valid.
